How to Care For Baby's Teeth

You will have 2 sets of teeth in your life: decidious (baby teeth) and permanent.  Decidius will fall out atBaby Teeth some point and permanent teeth come in later.

Baby's teeth come in around the 4th-7th month.  Before then you can get them ready for teeth by caring for gums during that time.

Before teeth break the gums, bacteria can't get at them, but it is still a way to keep the area healthy.  Use a damp baby washcloth or damp gauze to gently rub their gums.  Baby may try to gum your finger, but will get used to the sensation.  A cold damp washcloth is soothing to gums when teething, and, once their little teeth appear, use the gauze or washcloth on a daily basis to keep them clean.

As baby begins to eat food, there is more chance for food to get stuck and decay in the mouth.  With only 2 or 3 teeth spread far apart this is not a major concern, but cleaning each tooth will help keep them free from acids that can affect teeth and lead to cavities.

At one year, try using a little toothpaste on a baby toothbrush to clean their teeth; brushing am and pm.  Use a small amount that doesn't contain any fluoride (safe for them to swallow) as baby will not be adept at spitting it out.  Taking care of baby's teeth and gums is part of taking care of their overall health.  Teach them good habits that last a lifetime!
