Holistic Dentistry

The Mouth-Body Connection

Research studies have shown that there is a strong association between periodontal disease and other chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy complications and respiratory disease.  As a holistic (biological) dentist, Dr. Wright takes into consideration the cause-and-effect relationship between a patient's oral health and the health of the rest of their body.  In contrast, a traditional dentist tends to focus on the more mechanically oriented tasks of treating symptoms and repairing structures as problems arise, without looking for root causes.

Meridian Tooth Chart

This is a very interesting interactive Meridian Tooth Chart that demonstrates the mouth-body connection.

The Guiding Philosophies of Holistic Dentistry

  • "First, do no harm." (Hippocrates)
  • The health of the mouth and the body are one and the same.
  • By seeking out and working to understand the root cause of illness, the biological practitioner helps the patient achieve health stability, wellness and a reduced need for avoidable, unnecessary and costly treatment.

Holistic Treatment of Tooth Decay

When treating dental decay, which is referred to as a cavity, a traditional dental practitioner will mechanically remove the existing mercury and silver amalgam filling, plus the decay, then restore the tooth with a filling and consider the treatment complete.

Dr. Wright is a holistic mercury-free dentist and he practices the safe removal of mercury fillings.  As a long time member of the International Association of Oral & Medicine Toxicology (IAOMT), he uses their recommended mercury removal methods for holistic dentists to protect patient's from inhaling mercury vapors (Hg), or coming in contact with any mercury particulate during the mercury removal process.

Dr. Wright also uses mercury air filtration in his office to further protect against toxic mercury.  After using the correct holistic dental protocol to remove the decayed tooth material, he restores the tooth with an appropriate non toxic material.  Dr. Wright is a perfectionist known for his beautiful Cosmetic Dentistry and he carefully chooses a restoration color that matches the patient's tooth color so closely that the tooth looks new again.

Holistic Treatment of Periodontal Disease

When periodontal disease is present, and periodontal pockets measure in excess of 4 mm, the traditional practice is to remove the plaque, calculus and tartar debris from the teeth, and provide oral hygiene instruction.  Dr. Wright is a conservative holistic dentist and believes in using the least invasive non-surgical approach first: traditional scaling and root planing (deep cleaning).  In addition to this, he treats periodontal disease with a state-of-the art laser that he uses successfully to avoid gum surgery for most periodontal disease.  Combining state-of-the-art technology with a conservative holistic dental approach, laser energy is applied to inactivate periodontal disease.

If the disease has advanced and osseous (gum) surgery is necessary, patients are able to have their gum surgery at Four Seasons Dental Spa under the expert care of a board certified Periodontist.  Today's advanced surgical procedures can cure defects, thereby reducing the patient's susceptibility to periodontal disease.
